Preparing for a Flood

Hurricane season begins June 1st and continues through November 30th. Strong storms during the season increase the risk of flooding to homes in certain areas. Not only can you start to prepare your home for flooding, but you can also learn what to do during a flood.

Collect Emergency Supplies

Having a dedicated storage for emergency supplies can help you and your family in case a flood causes a power outage or roads are blocked. Store these supplies in a waterproof container and keep them in a place your family will remember. Make sure to edit this list according to your family’s needs, but a basic supply list should include:

  • Extra food and water for a few days for each member of your family, including pets
  • Extra medications
  • Flashlights, battery-operated radios, and extra batteries
  • First-aid kit
  • Extra clothing
  • Important documents stored in waterproof bags

Place Sandbags

Sandbags are a great way to help block water from different entrance points of your home. Place them at the base of front doors, sliding glass doors, and any other opening your home may have that reaches the ground. Pile them on top of each other like pyramids for better stability.

During a Flood

Be sure to listen to the authorities and evacuate immediately if you are told to do so. As you move through a flood, try to avoid the flood water as much as possible. The water may be contaminated by debris or sewage. Moving water is also dangerous as it can pull you and a vehicle away. If walking through water is unavoidable, check the depth of the water before stepping in it as it could be deeper than it seems.

After a Flood

Avoid all electrical and gas appliances that may have been exposed to water. Be sure to dry everything completely and treat your house in case of mold. Document the damage in case you would like to submit a claim.
